About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word which means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore every style of music.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name throughout the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
